Article by Garry C
It’s a big decision to choose between private school, home school, and public schools. You have to weigh the advantage and disadvantages of each. What are some of the disadvantages of home schooling?
The most common disadvantage that is brought up is socialization concerns. The argument made is that kids aren’t growing up around other kids like would normally be happening while at a school with other kids. It’s possible to have a social child who is home schooled, but if you don’t have any time for your kids, it’s going to be difficult. In that case, home schooling wouldn’t be best for you.
Sometimes you don’t have the answers to questions. It’s hard to know all the answers to a variety of subjects at the same time like a teacher who specializes in the subject might know. If you don’t know all the answers, you will have to know how to research and find them to answer them for your child.
You will miss out on the free or cheap sports activities your child can be in. There are sports leagues your children can join, but they will be more expensive compared to the price in public school.
If you have issues with your children, these will come up when you are trying to teach your child. If there are tons of unresolved conflict between you two, home schooling might be a very difficult process. You will need to get along else these conflicts will hurt the educational process.
There are certain types of experiences that are hard to reproduce at home. One would be a science lab experience. This type of lab work is not easily done at home unless you have considerable resources to make it happen. Many of these disadvantages have a solution. That’s not to say that home schooling is a bad process. You will have to overcome these if you want to go this route with your child.
