Free Home Schooling

Article by Doug Nicholson

Free home schooling is a very possible goal for those who are willing to be creative and invest what it takes to design their own curriculum. If you make it your goal not to purchase more than the basic necessities such as paper and pens and such, you can actually design your homeschooling program for less than you would spend on lunch money in public school.

One of the keys to achieving free homeschooling is taking advantage of the free or inexpensive resources available to you. Although you may not be aware of them, all the tools you need to create a successful curriculum are at your fingertips on the internet and at the library. Home school support groups also will have free materials that will aid you in making a plan for your child’s school year.

To begin with you may want to do a search online for free curriculums and homeschooling materials. Some online home schooling support sites actually have a variety of options for home schooling curriculums to choose from. Because this information is all online, you will not need to spend money on transportation, tutoring fees, or packaged curriculums.

If you wish you can literally start from scratch in building your home school curriculum and lesson plans. It is not as difficult as you might think to plan reading lessons from your child’s favorite story books or the Bible, write out math problems, practice penmanship/spelling words, do simple science projects and borrow age appropriate history books from the library.

You can also purchase some inexpensive teachers manuals and workbooks and then use those to build lesson plans around. Some of the benefits of owning your own books are that you can reuse them for the younger children as they get older and they are accessible to you when you can’t get to the library or the internet is down. And of course if you can’t afford to buy books then the chances are your local library will have a huge wealth of resources that you can borrow when you need them.

Seek out other homeschooling parents and support groups. They will be invaluable to you in many ways. They will give you tried and practical ideas for making your own curriculum, problem solving tools, and even opportunities for socialization and field trips. And speaking of field trips, what ordinarily is an expensive outing for your child in school can be done for practically nothing in the homeschooling environment.

You can opt to visit sites within close proximity to your home such as cultural and historical sites, or simply take a walk in the park and examine the plant life. And you can use the information gleaned on these outings as lessons to plan class time around.

With some careful thought and creativity, you can easily design a free home schooling plan that accommodates your wallet and your family needs.
