3 Steps on How to Get a Football Scholarship
Article by Chirs Berg
Imagine being a freshman in high school, watching John Elway throwing TD’s and dreaming about what could be. With come from behind WINS and TD passes all over the field, Elway was truly amazing. I was in love with Elway and how he played the game. He peaks my curiosity enough for me to do some homework on him, and I find out he went to Stanford University. I was fired up, I made a life changing decision, “I was going to play quarterback at Stanford University.” Now, keep in mind, at the time, I am about 5’10”, and I live in Fargo, ND. Nothing against Fargo, but ice covered ground is an everyday occurrence around there…. how am I going to go from this unknown football market to QB U? Does this sound far fetched?Well, that is where my story comes in, and I want to share it with you so that you too can make your collegiate dreams a reality. I pulled out some paper, since computers were limited, and wrote down my goal:I am going to Stanford University with a full-ride scholarship to play football. Then I read that GOAL every night before I went to bed, and I would fall asleep visualizing myself playing at Stanford. I knew it was going to happen I just didn’t know how.It happened, my mom calls and says, “Hey Chris, the news was on, and I heard that Elway will be in Stanford doing a football camp for QBs. Do you want to go?”I said, “Of course!” I made it to Stanford the summer between my sophomore and junior year. WOW, was I in for an awakening and an inspiration. The talent at the camp was amazing, and it was a tremendous confidence booster for me because it proved to me that I could compete with the big boys around the country.I was so inspired that when I got back home I rewrote some of my goals and prepared for my junior year.We won the North Dakota State ChampionshipWe had back to back undefeated seasonsI am First Team All-ConferenceAgain, I would read these goals every night before I went to bed, and I would visualize myself achieving my goals. At Fargo South, I had a tremendous supporting cast and I was able to achieve my goals thanks the the teams hard work but most importantly I was extremely dedicated to achieving my goals. After my junior season, I put together a highlight video, along with my athletic resume and transcript, and I began to send this packet of information to coaches all over the country.. Shortly thereafter, I started to get letters and questionnaires from schools. I filled out the questionnaires and sent them back to the schools. Nebraska, Minnesota and Stanford were the three schools I went to for their football camp. This was an amazing experience for me, and it opened a TON of doors for my future. After these camps, I had created scholarship opportunities at all 3 of these schools and many others. At the start of my senior year, I created yet another batch of videos for coaches from around the country. I was getting good reviews from coaches and I was getting my desired response or “official recruiting visit.” And you could have guessed, my first visit was to Stanford. Coach Dennis Green offered me a Scholarship to attend Stanford, I said, “YES!!!” Inside I was SCREAMING with EXCITEMENT from my scholarship offer to Stanford University, and I ended up at Stanford playing football and they picked up the check. This is my story and a very brief version without the proper ending. I would like to tell you more about how to get a football scholarship of your own because if this skinny kid from Fargo North Dakota can do it I know that I can help many others do the same.
